University of Warwick medical students recently swapped the classroom for the great outdoors at our allotments – and didn’t hesitate to get stuck in. From digging up potatoes and weeding, to hedge trimming, painting and learning about growing fresh produce, they embraced every task with energy and enthusiasm.

The morning was more than just practical skills. It showed the value of a holistic approach to health and wellbeing: how access to nature, sustainable food and community can support both physical and mental health.

For the students, it was a welcome break from lectures: fresh air, shared laughter and a sense of achievement. The experience left them not only with muddy boots and new skills, but also with a deeper appreciation of how simple, meaningful activities like gardening can nurture wellbeing.
