This International Women’s Day, we’re taking a moment to recognise the women who make a difference in our lives – not just in big, life-changing ways, but in the everyday moments that support our wellbeing.

At Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Mind, our team knows that mental health is deeply connected to the people around us, whether it’s a friend who always listens, a colleague who makes us laugh, or a family member who offers a listening ear.

In this blog, our staff share stories of the women who have played a role in their wellbeing. Their stories remind us that support can come in many forms, and that no-one should face life’s challenges alone. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, reach out to us today for support.

Vanessa, Senior Fundraiser, about her friend, Jo:

“Jo is an incredible friend who plays a huge role in supporting my mental health. As a qualified holistic therapist at Tree of Life Holistics Rugby, she brings so much warmth, wisdom and care into my life. Whether it’s through her shamanic drumming classes, calming soundbaths, or the many treatments she offers, she always knows how to help me find balance and peace. Beyond her skills, Jo is simply a wonderful person – always there to listen, encourage, and uplift me. I feel truly lucky to have her by my side.”

Gary, Manager of Wellbeing for Warwickshire, about his nieces:

“My two twenty-something nieces inspire me to still explore the world, listen to new music without mentioning the 80s and continue to make every day worthwhile. They say, ‘Be brave, Uncle G!’, or ‘BFG’, as they call me. I learn something new every time we connect.”

Emma, Volunteer Coordinator, about her sister-in-law, Sam:

“Sam supports my wellbeing simply by being there and by being an empathic listener. She regularly checks in on how I’m doing without prompting, and takes the time to metaphorically sit alongside me when I’m struggling. She doesn’t tell me what to do either, which is very helpful too! Sam is also very thoughtful, taking note of important events and letting me know she’s thinking of me as they arise. She’s a real superstar – thank you for being awesome, Sam, I’m lucky to have you!”

Adar, Team Leader at NHS Talking Therapies, about her Reiki instructor, Lucia:

“Lucia supports my wellbeing with her patience, kindness and thoughtfulness. She listens first, takes time to understand, and then works her magic. Her approach is a blend of therapy, recharging, spirituality, meditation and chakra balancing. Every session leaves me feeling heard, lighter, revitalised and ready to face life’s daily challenges.”

Ian, Practitioner at Wellbeing for Coventry, about his partner, Jess:

“Jess is my primary source of support in my life. She’s always there for me, listening with patience and understanding, especially when I’ve struggled with my mental health. She’s supported me through the more difficult parts of studying and work, encouraging me when I’ve doubted myself. She also helps with looking after our cat and dog, making sure they’re happy and cared for. Her kindness, patience, and unwavering support mean so much to me every day and she helps me feel more relaxed.”

Claire, Tutor at the Recovery and Wellbeing Academy, about her friend:

“Today, I honour my close friend for her vulnerability and courage. She’s genuine and understands me, making me feel less alone. Her authenticity, emotional maturity, wisdom, honesty, humour, patience, and deep compassion for my flaws, along with her unconditional friendship and willingness to face challenges together, make me feel safe, heard, and loved. I appreciate her beyond words.”

Ian, Peer Mentor at CASS, about his sister:

“My oldest sister has had the biggest influence on my life, always teaching me and guiding me through life, encouraging me but also being honest. She is always inspiring me to go above and beyond in life, supporting my dream to go to uni and to push past all the limitations because she knew I was capable of achieving more”

Sam, Manager of Wellbeing for Warwickshire:

“I am incredibly grateful for the women who support my wellbeing every day. From the insightful research and words of Emily Nagoski, Amelia Nagoski, and Brené Brown to the invaluable lessons I learned during stress and resilience training—thank you, Niki, for your guidance! The seven ways to complete the stress cycle, from movement to laughter and creative expression, have become part of my daily routine. Even more so, I am fortunate to be surrounded by an inspiring network of women, many of whom work alongside me at Coventry, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire Mind, lifting me up with their wisdom, humor, and kindness.”
