Guidance on creating a will

  1. What types of wills can I make?
There are three main types of gifts that people tend to leave to charities:
  • Pecuniary gift (also called a cash gift) – this is a fixed sum of money (for example, £500).
  • Residuary gift (also known as a percentage gift) – this is a proportion of your remaining estate after all other gifts have been paid out (for example. 5%).
  • Specific gift is a nominated object for example a piece of artwork, a collection of coins or an antique.
How you phrase your will depends on what type of gift you want to make. Our corporate partners Askews Solicitors can help with this, or your chosen solicitor.
  1. Useful wording when writing a will?
We’d recommend that you have a will written by a solicitor or professional will-writing service. This helps prevent any future legal issues. Legacy story: Coopers Lodge

Mr Cooper’s Legacy to Coventry MIND.

In 1996, Mr Cooper left Coventry MIND (now known as Coventry and Warwickshire Mind) a legacy donation.

Mr Cooper was part of the original group of individuals who established the organisation and worked in the finance department at Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry. Despite losing contact with the charity since his initial involvement, he decided that he wanted to leave an amount of money to continue to support the work we do.

His estate was split between four charities, including Coventry MIND, with each receiving in the region of £140,000.

There were no stipulations as to how the legacy should be spent. We were able to put a case forward to the Board of Trustees. Our day centre had previously operated from Queen’s Road Baptist Church for many years. This location had become unsuitable for the needs of the service and there were some issues in relation to the building meeting new requirements and other guidelines. So, the Board of Trustees took a decision to search for a suitable building and 61 St Nicholas Street was found. The site had been a family home combined with a Doctors’ Surgery.

The new building was purchased in 1997 and the Board of Trustees committed to spending the equivalent amount as the purchase on refurbishing the building to bring it up to the standards required to operate as a day centre. Without the legacy donation from Mr Cooper, it is very unlikely that we would have purchased 61 St Nicholas Street. The building was named Coopers Lodge in his memory.

Coppers Lodge has housed many projects over the years. Initially, it was home to our re-housed day centre. Share and Amber, providing stress and anxiety management courses in community settings, was also co-ordinated from the building. This then became part of day services with peer support groups, one-to-one support sessions and the Befriending Service. It has also been home to the Recovery and Wellbeing Academy, Mums in Mind and the Counselling Service, along with a continuation of the one-to-one Pathfinder navigation sessions.

In addition, the advantage of having our own building means we have been able to hold out-of-hours activities. Over the years, this has been used to provide a training venue, home for a women’s only support group called Women In Mind (WIM), events for the Children and Young People’s Service and much more. To date, we have supported over 40,000 people accessing services at Coopers Lodge and this is growing.

And finally, you’re doing something selfless and incredibly thoughtful – please let us know.
